Connect. Grow. Climb.

Our Mission: Empower underrepresented climbers by fostering a safe and inclusive community space for all skill levels and backgrounds. We aim to help mitigate the financial barriers to access through free community rentals and scholarship opportunities. We promote responsible recreation to preserve our local crags and steward the land as our ancestors have for generations.

On September 2, 2018, I found myself dry heaving with fatigued muscles on the false summit of Nevada’s highpoint - Boundary Peak. Struggling with altitude sickness, I could hear my friend crying in the background while phoning her father about our decision to turn around due to our late start time, with night quickly approaching. I was overwhelmed with emotions. I felt tears swelling in my eyes as I began my descent. And that’s when it hit me. The reality of where we were and what we were doing flooded through my body like electricity as I gazed in the distance… we were walking on the moon. This was the first mountain I ever climbed. For years I admired adventurers from afar and created a narrative that I didn’t belong, nobody looked like me, I wasn’t athletic enough, I didn’t start young enough, I’m not fast or strong enough, etc… but here we were… walking on the moon. This experience had a ripple effect on my life. I have since been very passionate as a BIPOC Neurodivergent woman, to help underrepresented folks overcome imposter syndrome and self-limiting beliefs in the world of climbing.

My experience with Flash Foxy, an inclusive climbing festival, showed me how impactful creating an intentional space for climbing has on community, empowerment, and mitigating barriers to access. This experience led me to forming Coalition Crag in April 2022 initially as a place for women and non-binary folks of all skill levels to have a safe place to show up on their climbing journey. In 2023, I began receiving more interest from folks outside of the scope of this club, which has led me to rebrand the club to underrepresented climbers + allies. I wanted a club that didn’t feel so “exclusive”, that made everyone feel like they belonged. I also believe it is crucial for allies to be present. To better understand the challenges people face so they can be a catalyst for change.

Dexter Arver | Vice President

Hi, my name is Dexter! I love the outdoors and the activities associated with it—hiking, camping, climbing, kayaking, biking, etc. I have a blog that shows that at theweeklycamper.com. I started climbing to get over my fear of heights and while I don't think I'll ever completely get over it, I have made tremendous progress. I am currently working on knocking out the most famous easy multipitch routes in California.

Outside of outdoor activities, I apparently like to collect hobbies, as I like cooking, photography, graphic design, writing, video editing, etc. Which all means that I’m not great at anything but am decent at numerous things.

At Coalition Crag, I like to host occasional outdoor meetups open to all skill levels and love meeting new people in the community. I have made my closest climbing friends through this community and I hope that others do too!

Hi my name is Shari (she/her). I have been climbing for about 3 years both indoors and outdoors. There are so many reasons I love climbing. Community: I love people in general, but the climbing community has been awesome!  Nature: I love the great outdoors, and what better way to experience nature than to see it from the top of a giant rock! Self-Improvement and Satisfaction: Climbing is exhilarating and makes me feel free, the rock challenges me both mentally and physically! And  last but certainly not least…I love rocks!

Coalition Crag has provide me a safe and excepting community, where I have overcome Imposter Syndrom and learned to love what my body can do for me, instead of worrying about how my body doesn’t look or fit the climbing norm. The more time I spent with this wonderful group of humans, the more I wanted to get involved, give back, and share my experiences with others. I am now the Treasurer of Coalition Crag and a gym captain hosting 1st Tuesdays at Movement Sunnyvale for anyone who wants to learn to climb or meet other awesome climbers in a safe, non-competitive and inclusive environment.

When I am not climbing, I enjoy hiking, backpacking, skiing, traveling (when I can afford it), riding my dirt bikes, lounging in my hammock, and hanging out at my cabin in Twain Harte!

Fun fact: my 15 minutes of fame came in 1989 when I was in my first women’s championship motorcross race. The next weekend our race was featured on wide world of sports!

Shari Brossard | Treasurer &
Movement Sunnyvale Gym Captain

My climbing journey started in 2003, when my father and I went to an indoor climbing gym; in order to get me out of the house. I fell in love with climbing at that moment and ultimately joined the youth climbing team. I started my first job at the gym as well. I would spend the summers at the Red River Gorge, climbing outdoors.

I moved to California in December 2022 and wanted to find a way to meet people. Coalition Crag has provided me a way to reach my 2 goals; meeting new people and climbing. Once I continued going to their meetups, I knew I wanted to give back due to the community they provide others. I am the gym captain hosting the 1st Wednesday at Movement Santa Clara. Come and Join!

Movement Santa Clara Gym Captain

I entered the world of climbing in 2021 thinking I would just pick up a fun hobby - which I did - but I also found so much more. I have mainly been an indoor boulderer with a love for balance-y and technical climbs. To me, Coalition Crag means a community of folks excited to climb and break down barriers to the sport, whether it be financial, needing training, or feeling one's identity isn't reflected within the community. During work hours, I am a nonprofit marketing professional, and the rest of the time, I can be found exploring new hiking trails, crocheting, and hanging out with my two cats.
